The court's position in the justice system
The Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa is the successor to the Appellate Division, first established in 1910 when the Union of South Africa was created. The name of the court was changed by the Constitution of 1996. According to the Constitution, the Supreme Court of Appeal -
* functions only as a court of appeal
* may decide any matter on appeal and,
* is, except for constitutional matters, the highest court of appeal more
